Supreme Court allows for Louisiana congressional map to be redrawn to add another majority-Black district

The Daily Show is a show that boggles my mind that a white person could look at George Washington. He's the biggest villain this country has ever had, setting up race relationship issues that we still have to struggle with to this day.

REPLY

The US has such a grey past. It's hard to take pride in all the good things we've done and our founders. Bernie Sanders likes to make, which is that. Compared to now when there's a boom in any sector, very few people in the bottom 90% of the population get anything.

REPLY

The Supreme Court rejected maps that reduced congressional district representation of majority black voters in Alabama and Louisiana. They could go the Ohio route, have it rejected but OOPSIE its too late before the next election.

REPLY

The Supreme Court doesn't do Whack-a-Mole. They set precedent for lower courts. This is a positive sign that as corrupt and morally bankrupt as they are.

REPLY

Here's Louisiana's congressional map. And here's a map where African-Americans are a majority.

The Supreme Court won’t let a North Carolina charter school force girls to wear skirts to school

Baker Mitchell said the dress code was intended to promote "chivalry" by the male students and respect for the female students. He says it encourages thinking about a person differently depending on gender and has very outdated norms associated with it. The implicit message is the girl is weak and must depend on a man to navigate the world.

REPLY

Charter Day School says it seeks to "emphasize traditional values" and enforces a dress code. Girls aren't vintage gravy boats. They're girls. Honor them by treating them as equals.

REPLY

i went to a fairly strict catholic k-8 school and even they would let girls wear pants if they wanted.

U.S. court blocks Florida law restricting drag performances

Texas airport worker dies after being sucked into Delta jet engine

A source who was briefed on the case tells the Guardian that it appeared the worker had "intentionally stepped in front of the live engine" on the jet. She said she saw the aftermath of train/person suicides a couple times.

REPLY

Most people die relatively slow painful deaths. Critical care nurse for way too long here. It was so rare for critical patients to survive in the begining.

REPLY

The ramper left a suicide note and jumped head first into the engine. Gate agent says the ramper was one of the wing walkers guiding it in. The system is activated by a ramp agent or a marshaller.

In Japan they call these sorts of things "human accidents" and have dedicated teams to cleaning up and getting the trains going ASAP. In a city of 30M people the trains need to run, so they have a turnaround time of less than 20mins AFAIK.

As fuel taxes plummet, states weigh charging by the mile instead of the tank

In Victoria, Australia, the government made people take photos of their odometer and email them in. Predictably, it was a disaster. In Virginia where year ypu have to have your car inspected and I could see them just noting it there.

REPLY

If you tie the tax to something physically connected to a single state, everything will be fine. The physical connection will be which state the car is registered in. It's a tax on your car, not on using the roads, proportional to the odometer reading.

REPLY

More than 1% of US vehicles on the road are electric or plug in hybrids. This percentage is going to start growing very fast over the next 5 to 10 years. If you’re in Pennsylvania you’ve been experiencing this forever. They never fix the potholes, regardless of money.

REPLY

Compared the road damage done by a vehicle has a rule of thumb that’s (W1 / w2 ) 4, where W is the average weight on any axle on a. The fourth power means that weight per axle scales wildly. If the Hummer only pays 3x the taxes via fuel consumption then the damage from the hummer would be subsidized by the Camry.
